Wendell is a student at San Pueblo High School. He plays football and delivers groceries for Mr. Busby, but is incompetent at both. He is shy, clumsy, awkward, and has a redneck accent. He has never been on a date in his life. He has a crush on Laurie Partridge and wants to ask her out, but is afraid to talk to her. Once Danny and Keith Partridge realize that Wendell has a crush on their sister, they give him some pointers on how to talk to girls and help him work up the nerve to ask Laurie out. Laurie agrees to go out with him on Friday night. Now that Wendell has a date planned with Laurie, his confidence improves dramatically, and so do his football skills. Laurie finds out later that the Partridge Family have a concert on Friday night. When she tells Wendell, he thinks she's rejecting him and becomes more uncomfortable around girls than ever. Keith and Shirley Partridge both try to talk to him, but with no success. Eventually Laurie manages to talk to Wendell and asks him to take her to a party thrown by the football team. Wendell is finally convinced that Laurie really wants to go out with him. Wendell has a wonderful time at the dance and almost asks Laurie to go steady, but instead decides that now that he's been on a date with a nice girl, he wants to try dating "rotten" girls. The day after the dance, Wendell asks Laurie to meet him at the taco stand. He tells her that he likes her a lot but doesn't want to get too serious with her and wants to try dating other girls. Then he goes off to sit with two girls, who are both dating him at the same time. With his newfound confidence, he has no trouble getting girls.
